Professor Timothy Neal Coulson FRSB, FBES, FRS (born 31 July 1968, Cambridge) is an eminent biologist and academic who serves as an Independent Director on the board of Blue Water Acquisition Corp. IV (NYSE: BWIV.U), a blank-check company that priced its $125 million IPO in March 2026 with a focus on identifying target businesses in the biotechnology, healthcare, and technology sectors. Coulson was appointed to the BWIV board alongside Trevor L. Hawkins and Laurent D. Hermouet, with the sponsor team led by CEO and Chairman Joseph Hernandez and CFO Martha F. Ross. Coulson is Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford and a Professorial Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, positions he has held since 2013. Coulson's distinguished career has been recognized with numerous honors. He received the Zoological Society of London Scientific Medal in 2007, the Imperial College Post-graduate Huxley Memorial Medal in 2008, the Per Brinck Award in 2012, the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2012, and the British Ecological Society Marsh Award in 2012. He was named a Fellow of the British Ecological Society in 2025 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May 2026, one of the highest honors in British science. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and a Fellow of the British Ecological Society. Beyond his academic work, Coulson is an accomplished author and science communicator. His book "The Universal History of Us" was published by Michael Joseph (an imprint of Penguin Books) in June 2024, with a U.S. edition titled "The Science of Why We Exist" published by Pegasus Books in July 2024 and a paperback edition retitled "A Little History of Everything" released in May 2025. He was the subject of an episode of BBC Radio 4's "The Life Scientific" broadcast on May 27, 2025. He was educated at Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge and is married to fellow Oxford Professor Sonya M. Clegg, with whom he has three children from a previous relationship.
