Russell "Russ" Stidolph is a seasoned alternative energy investor and executive who currently serves as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of AltEnergy Acquisition Corp. (NASDAQ: AEAE), a special purpose acquisition company that raised $230 million in its October 2021 IPO. He is also the founder and Managing Director of AltEnergy, LLC, a Norwalk, Connecticut-based private equity firm focused exclusively on alternative energy investing. Stidolph has over two decades of experience building and financing businesses across the energy transition landscape, and he leads all transaction sourcing and negotiation for the SPAC, which was formed to identify a merger target in the alternative energy, clean technology, or sustainable infrastructure sectors with an enterprise value of approximately $400 million to $1 billion. The SPAC announced a definitive business combination agreement on February 21, 2024.
Stidolph began his career in private equity at J.H. Whitney & Co., a firm founded in 1946 and recognized as a pioneer in the industry. In 2000, he launched and led Whitney's cleantech venture and private equity investing practice, where he spearheaded some of the U.S. market's first large-scale, successful alternative energy transactions. During his tenure at Whitney, he co-founded companies including Hawkeye Renewables, which grew into the third-largest ethanol producer in the United States, and Iowa Winds, which developed one of the largest wind power portfolios in Iowa at the time. He departed Whitney in 2006 to found AltEnergy, LLC, and has since remained focused on the sector, serving as Managing Director and Principal. Over his career, Stidolph has led investments in nine alternative energy businesses and infrastructure projects, co-founding and serving as chairman of four and serving as Chief Financial Officer of two. These investments span biofuels (Hawkeye Renewables), renewable power generation (Iowa Winds, American Heartland Wind, Broadview Energy), demand response software (Viridity Energy), transmission infrastructure (Anbaric Power, Tres Amigas, Western Interconnect), and energy storage technology (Eos Energy Enterprises).
One of Stidolph's most notable achievements was co-founding Eos Energy Storage, a zinc-based battery manufacturer that went public via a SPAC merger in 2020. He served as CFO of Eos before transitioning to its public board, where he held the role of non-executive Chair from April 2018 until his decision to step down from the board effective December 31, 2025. AltEnergy, LLC was a lead investor in Eos, and Stidolph's stewardship was publicly honored by the company upon his departure. According to SEC filings, he retains a significant equity position in Eos Energy Enterprises (NASDAQ: EOSE), owning approximately 2.4 million shares valued at over $10 million. His direct operational experience scaling a hard-tech energy business from laboratory to commercial deployment and through the public markets provided the foundational expertise for the AltEnergy Acquisition Corp. sponsor group.
Stidolph holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and is based in Norwalk, Connecticut. His investment philosophy centers on anticipating major industry trends several years in advance and entering at inflection points when new technologies or markets are ready for commercial development but have not yet achieved wide acceptance. AltEnergy typically seeks to invest between $5 million and $15 million in high-growth companies, employing a dual "build or buy" approach that encompasses both founding companies from inception and leading institutional investment rounds in established businesses. Through AltEnergy, LLC and its affiliated entities, Stidolph has maintained a consistent track record of identifying and advancing landmark projects in the alternative energy economy for nearly two decades.
This record is keyed to SEC CIK 0001833275 — the identifier this person files under in their own name. Every vehicle above is a filing made under that CIK, so “the same person on two shells” is a fact about an SEC identifier rather than about a name that happens to match.
Roles are the strings the filings used, in the order they were filed. Nothing on this page ranks them, infers seniority, or offers a reason why any two of these names recur — a recurrence is a count, and the filings that produced it are linked beside every row. We also hold 26 institutional-holder rows on these vehicles, under 12 distinct name strings, and none of them is counted across vehicles: that table has no CIK column, and matching holders by name would merge firms that are not the same firm.
