James E. Flynn is the Managing Partner of Deerfield Management, a prominent New York-based healthcare and biotechnology investment firm he joined in 2000 and where he is responsible for the overall management of the firm. Under his leadership, Deerfield has expanded its investment capabilities to include venture and private structured financings, built deep healthcare information expertise through the Deerfield Institute, established the Deerfield Foundation to support disadvantaged children, created Deerfield Discovery and Development LLC for discovery research, and founded a healthcare innovation center at 345 Park Avenue South in New York City. Deerfield has broad investments across approximately 300 healthcare companies spanning early-stage biotechnology, digital health, and medical technology. Flynn is the sole member of the general partner of each of Deerfield's management entities and may be deemed to beneficially own securities held by the Deerfield Partners sponsor, including those of DA32 Life Science Tech Acquisition Corp., a SPAC for which he serves in a director/officer capacity. He has also been associated with Frazier Lifesciences Acquisition Corp. and Chardan Healthcare Acquisition Corp. in SPAC roles.
Before joining Deerfield, Flynn was a top-ranked analyst at Furman Selz covering pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Corporate Development at Alpharma Inc., a pharmaceutical company, where his responsibilities included business development, strategic planning, and the management of licensing transactions. He began his career in healthcare investing in 1988 at Kidder, Peabody & Co., where he ultimately served as a senior analyst covering the specialty pharmaceutical industry until 1993. Flynn holds a BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Economics from the University of Michigan and an MS in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University.
Flynn is actively engaged in healthcare governance and philanthropy. Since 2009, he has served as Chairman of the Quality Committee of the Board of Trustees of Continuum Health Partners, and following its 2013 merger with Mount Sinai Health System, he continues to serve on the Board of Trustees. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New York Academy of Medicine and a member of the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute Leadership Council. He is a United States citizen based in New York, and his track record includes overseeing Deerfield's off-market acquisition of 345 Park Avenue South from RFR Holding, a transaction that also made RFR's Aby Rosen an investor in a Deerfield life science fund and that established a major life science incubator ecosystem in New York City.
